Stone is a theatrical rewriting of Stone Butch Blues, a 1993 novel by lesbian activist Leslie Feinberg. It is the fictional biography of Jess Goldberg, who at the turn of the 1960s and 1980s lives facing the reality of not feeling that she belongs to either gender, but rather embodies an other, creative and non-binary dimension, in constant negotiation with context and in touch with her deepest self. Stone Butch Blues is a classic of LGBTQUIA+ literature: it tells along with Jess’s story that of the rights movements of the trans, gay and lesbian community in the United States, but at the same time it is a text that is still highly topical in addressing classism, racism, capitalism, homophobia and transphobia in an intersectional way, to provide us with a way to read the contemporary.
